EXCITE
Founders Mark Van Haren, Ryan McIntyre, Ben Lutch, Joe Kraus, Graham Spencer, and Martin Reinfried, five hackers and one political science major went to the Stanford library to research the best way in which to fill the information search-and-retrieval void. In December of 1994, Kleiner Perkins Caulfield and Byers, and Institutional Venture Partners invested in
Excite with the purchase of a $4000 hard drive and went online in Dec 1995.
Excite announced that it would be acquired by
@Home
.com in beginning of 1999. Until mid 1999,
Excite was the search engine used AOL NetFind and Netscape.
Excite offers both keyword-based searching and also concept-based searching (it will not only search for the terms you type in but also similar terms).
Excite has free e-mail and offers a downloadable speed bar which is this search engine's toolbar on your desktop.
Excite's home page is also busy and full of links. It is divided into the following main sections:
- Excite Meta Search by web, by directory, by photos
It also has an advanced search feature, along with a white pages link and a yellow pages link. There is a flashing advertising banner on
Excite's home page. You can click on a lite link which shows a page with not so many links on it.
According to New York-based Internet research firm Jupiter Media Metrix,
Excite was the eighteenth most popular Web media property in April.
There was no place to submit a web site to this search engine, or did it state how many web pages were indexed.
