Distribution Procedure
Contents
General
Generally a two hour orientation class is scheduled followed by a one hour window for computer distribution, possibly at a different location.
Recipients will have been notified in advance. They must attend the orientation session to, among other things, obtain and sign the papers that must be presented to pick up their computer.
Recipients must be warned during the orientation of the conditions at the distribution center -- there are often hazards or other activities going on -- they must control their children to avoid hazards or disturb other activities in progress at the distribution center.
Before a computer is distributed:
- the hard disk is reconfigured and formatted
- a new operating system is installed (Vector Linux for Kids)
- it is combined with a keyboard, mouse, and monitor to comprise a system
- it is logged into the CFK asset management system and assigned an asset number
- it is tested as a system shortly before distribution (ideally, the recipient will see the system operating before shutting it down for distribution)
- when supplies allow, computers with CD-Rom drives and modems (later, after working out installation and other details) will be distributed
When the computer is issued to the recipient, a volunteer collects the paperwork, makes sure it has been signed by the recipient, adds the CFK asset number, and saves the paperwork for forwarding to
CherryLeePlessor who will update the asset managment system accordingly.
Generally, two sessions will be scheduled, as follows:
Morning:
Afternoon:
The distribution center (
StLukesChurch) will be manned from 11:00 AM to 12 Noon and from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. It
may also be manned at other times during that day between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM during which the activities of a typical
WorkParty may occur.
Volunteers expecting to participate in a
WorkParty during hours other than 11:00 AM to 12 Noon and from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM must coordinate with somebody who has a key to the facility (currently only
RandyPlessor, AFAIK).
