~/.Xdefaults: A file in a user's home directory that contains some default settings for X. Try viewing yours. See ~/.

(I found this file on my Mandrake 7.2 system, but not on my Mandrake 8.1 system -- maybe that is part of the problem with my installation of 8.1.)

(I wonder if turning off xterm colors in this file is an alternate way to get the black text on white background display that I prefer for Midnight Commander. See MidnightCommanderBlackOnWhiteLikeSourceforge.)
