Press Release

San Jose, California, 16 January 2008 - TWiki.org, the open source community behind TWiki, the Application Wiki, today announced version 4.2 of its popular wiki software.

The new release focuses on improvements to installation, administration and programmability but also adds a completely new WYSIWYG editor which looks set to take the popular enterprise wiki into wider markets. TWiki contributor Crawford Currie says, "The new WYSIWYG editor has been enthusiastically taken up by a wide range of users, even those outside TWiki's traditional IT and engineering user base. This new feature will considerably widen TWiki's appeal."

Experienced TWiki users already know the benefits that this flexible wiki can bring. "At Nokia we are always looking for new and improved ways of communicating," said Harri Lakkala, Social Software Expert at Nokia. "In use since 2002, TWiki has developed inside Nokia into a valuable tool for team collaboration, sharing of ideas and promoting innovation." Nokia is not alone in their appreciation of TWiki and the system has now been adopted by the majority of the Fortune 500 companies.

Release highlights:

  • WYSIWYG editor - a completely new, simple to use editor virtually eliminates the need for training and promotes faster and more inclusive take up of the wiki within the organization.
  • SQL style query language for programmable search
  • New restore feature allows for easier rollback and policing of page changes/edits
  • Installation enhancements to make installation and upgrades easier
  • Improved login name/wiki name mapping to enable easier integration with external authentication mechanisms, such as LDAP
  • Improved plugins API

Notes for Editors:

An application wiki is a wiki that provides workflow, scripting and structured data which allows users to create custom applications for themselves to address a variety of commonly occurring business problems. These applications can be developed by end users without needing expensive IT resources or support. Wiki applications are developed for a wide variety of uses such as project trackers, inventory systems, quality management systems, sales lead trackers or publishing/editorial systems. Application wikis can also act as portals, community blogs or news feed aggregators, bringing web 2.0 into the enterprise with user driven content and application logic.
