Discussion

Sorry, for not being there. Did the chat take place?

-- MartinSeibert - 12 May 2008

This morning, by my watch, it took seven minutes to read each topic on TWiki.org, so I feel motivated to ask; Where is the new TWiki.org server? I see a couple of action items in TWikiMarketing that seem to have been standing open for quite a while now. I was expecting to find a rollout plan with some timescales on it (I assume that's what NewTWikiOrgServer2008 was to be for), but it looks like nothing has been done.

TWiki.org is a very poor advertisment for TWiki. I'm surprised you marketing types aren't having kittens over this.

-- CrawfordCurrie - 15 May 2008

Crawford: I agree. It is reducing the usage of TWiki a lot, that it is so slow. And: Why don't we use the current TWiki-implementation with a useful set of plugins?

Is anybody feeling responsible for that? How can "lamers" like me help with this issue? Maybe a foundation is not the worst thing. People could be payed to take care of server installation.

At the moment I feel that everybody expects those, that do the most for the community to do even more. That's not the right way.

But: We still need the new servers, Peter! big grin

-- MartinSeibert - 16 May 2008

If TWIKI.NET is having difficulties wrt deploying the community servers, there are alternatives. Before the announcement (which we were all very pleased about!) several of us were talking about and begining to design a proper scalable geo-distributed TWiki system for TWiki.org - with several servers around the world sharing the load and the bandwidth.

(I'd still love to see TWiki.org running on nice Niagra2 servers, but I do think having them all in one place isn't as good for TWiki.org compared to having the spread around where the users are).

Thanks Martin for the offer to help!

We all know that the slow twiki.org is not good advertising for TWiki, we all want to have that fixed as soon as possible.

I gave a short update on the server setup on IRC on Tue, http://koala.ilog.fr/twikiirc/bin/irclogger_log/twiki?date=2008-05-13,Tue&sel=705#l701. We will work on it again tomorrow Sat.

Thanks Peter, it's good to know that something is happening. I tried to help out by creating and updating the status topic with your comments. Could you keep the status topic relevant as things change? There are quite a few people interested in the status of these servers; it's a hot topic; and maintaing one topic should be a lot less hassle for you than fielding lots of individual questions.

excellent news smile
