ALTAVISTA
AltaVista , which means "a view from above", was inspired by the creation of big ideas and a fascination with keeping track of information. During the spring of 1995, scientists at Digital Equipment Corporation's Research lab in Palo Alto, CA, devised a way to store every word of every page on the entire Internet in a fast, searchable index. This led to the development of the first searchable, full-text database on the World Wide Web.
AltaVista Company patented technology continues to set the pace, making
AltaVista one of the preferred search engine among web users and the leading provider of search software to enterprise.
AltaVista licenses its search software to more than 1,200 of the world's leading e-commerce firms, portals and enterprises and is headquartered in Palo Alto, CA.
On
AltaVista's home page, there are six major ways to search web pages, by web, image, audio, video, directory news. There are advanced search and filter features as well. Also there are several links in several section listings on

You have to pay an annual fee to submit your website to
AltaVista . Again, I could not find how many web pages are this search engine indexes.
According to New York-based Internet research firm Jupiter Media Metrix;
AltaVista was not one of the most 50 popular Web media properties in April.
