When I installed Mandrake 8.2 I ran into some problems with Konqueror 2.2.2, so I've started to experiment with Galeon and Mozilla.
My initial impressions of Galeon:
I suspect it's somewhat like Konqueror -- not as well polished as some others (like IE5, Netscape (??), Mozilla (??), and (at this point, and in my experience) Konqueror). Some examples:
- There's something odd about the address bar and the focus -- I can paste an address into the address bar, but it doesn't get the focus so I can edit it -- I have to click in the address bar to get the focus there, even after just pasting something there.
- There's also something odd about the insertion point and its behavior near the bottom of a "textarea". When I first edit a page, and try to position the insertion point after the second last line ("Page Ratings" (which should be the last line, beside the point, I think), clicking in the vicinity of those lines but to the right positions the cursor at either the end of the last line or third last line -- I have to very deliberately position the cursor "precisely" at the end of the second last line and click there to get the insertion point positioned there. After I accomplish this the first time, the problem is gone (I'll have to try it when I re-edit a page). Update: Ok, after doing some typing up here, I went down to the bottom and tried this again -- back to a similar problem, although now it seems like I have trouble with a different line (4th from the bottom). Wierd!
- I don't like the height of the address bar -- it should be shorter (narrower), and I'd rather have it combined with the menu bar so I can minimize the number of toolbars displayed. (I really have very little use for the Back, Forward, Reload, ... buttons -- I do back and forward (in other browsers, anyway) with <alt> arrow shortcuts or with the right click context menu.
- The other toolbar, with Google, Google Groups, etc., with text entry fields looks like it may be worth keeping there (worth the real estate) -- I'll try it for awhile.
- Some of the keyboard shortcuts (and menu arrangements) are "nonstandard" -- reload is <ctrl>r instead of <F5>, and is on the "Go" menu far to the right (instead of the view menu) near the left. I'll have to pay attention -- maybe this is a "relic" of a Netscape derivation??
- I fooled around a little bit with the fonts and font sizes -- actually, I did more fooling around in Konqueror and Mozilla before I tried Galeon, and I suspect some of the font settings I made elsewhere affected what I see in Galeon. Bottom line, doesn't look bad, but, like I tried to imply -- if I saw the "real" initial defaults of Galeon, I might be disappointed.
