Resources and notes re satellite Internet services. (I'm too far away from my telephone central office for DSL, and my cable company (RCN) offers only one way cable modems in my area.

Notes
It appears that not many satelite services are ready to handle Linux. Here's a useful thread:
- Determining Antenna Direction
-- handy little page to help you determine if you have a line of sight, at least for StarBand and DishTV. (For me, between south southwest and west southwest, and say around 45 degrees up.)
Two Way Satellite Providers
- Starband
-- Terms of Use
-- doesn't seem to be anything to prohibit sharing (viewed 7 Feb 2003) -- oops, wait, a bunch of problems -- Chapter 11 (??), needs to be a Windows PC (at least at the head end), and, from this page
: "The StarBand service is for Internet connectivity and customer support of a single personal computer connected directly to the StarBand satellite modem. Additional computers, networked in such a way as to utilize the StarBand service and consume additional bandwidth, may result in service restrictions if the bandwidth usage exceeds permissible levels under the Acceptable Use Policy." -- although the AUP that I viewed today did not seem to specify a bandwidth usage limit -- oops, now I see -- there is a Terms of Use page and an Acceptable Use Policy
(and both are subject to unilateral change by StarBand without prior notice!! I think the word I'm looking for is f__'em. Cost is somewhere around $69.95 / month (various plans, etc., etc.) There is also a [[][small business plan]], around $129.95 (3 user) to $169.95 (5 user) a month -- might be worth checking out.
One Way Satellite Providers
- IWC
-- $49.95/month, 400 kbps down, telephone up -- didn't read AUP or whatever -- OK, read some more -- apparently no limit
on the number of PCs that can share the link!! -- could be worth considering at least for initial trials (but it also requires Windows, at least at the "head end")
