login: Many computers or networks attempt to provide a certain amount of security by trying to confirm that the user trying to use the system is the person that "owns" a particular user account. Many times this confirmation process involves entry by the user of their user name and a password. The process of confirmation of a user's identity in a manner like this is often called a login.
