Procmail is an
MDA and a lot more -- it has useful and extensive filtering capabilities.

Notes
Procmail is and can be used as an
MDA to deliver mail locally after receiving mail and being invoked by an
MTA.
Procmail may also be invoked by any user (automatically) to process the user's mail by rules the user can specify. This includes sorting mail into separate folders (in the user's mail directory on System8) based on content, sender, addressee, or whatever. (The user's mail directory varies depending on the mail client -- typical ones include ~/mail and ~/Mail.) (See
EmailFilesAndFolders?.)
Users that use IMAP mail clients on other machines can access those other folders, users that use POP3 cannot (AFAIK). I'll talk more about how procmail is used in my system later.

-- I've read part of this -- seems to give useful insights into how email works in general (beyond just dealing with procmail).
