virtual console: When most modern Linux distributions are installed, they create six virtual consoles that can be accessed by pressing <ctrl><alt>F1 thru F6. Each virtual console is the equivalent of a Linux (text based) console which you can login to and then get a command line where you can enter and execute commands. Try it.
(This is currently not working for me after my install of Mandrake 8.1. It has worked for me in many other installs of other Linux distros, and is working for other people who have installed Mandrake 8.1.)
