Feedback and discussion on FreeSkin

I've just added FreeSkin to TWiki.org.

-- AurelioAHeckert - 01 Dec 2003

Great, thanks Aurelio for sharing this with the community!

-- PeterThoeny - 01 Dec 2003

I downloaded FreeSkin to check it out and it appears to me that there are some files missing to make a complete skin set. In particular, there is no basic template file (e.g. twiki.freeskin.tmpl) which would define header's and footers and reference a style sheet.

Maybe I should just wait for a working example to be uploaded...

-- LynnwoodBrown - 09 Dec 2003

Yes... some thing don't exist in the FreeSkin, but i think you do not get the idea... Some people too. I need write more detailed about that.

We use this skin in Bahia/Brazil Federal Colege and in the National Institute of Information Tecnologi. (I helping to put it working on the Institute now.)

I gonna write... soon...

Is there a simple change that could be made to bin/view so that r17 - 2005-04-20 - 02:16:25 - ThomasWeigert and similar can be used or do I just have to modify the template?

-- StevenLumos - 02 Mar 2004

I don't know way, but r17 - 2005-04-20 - 02:16:25 - ThomasWeigert is not working... I found a "fix" (HARD!). See the code:

%SEARCH{search="FreeSkinDev" scope="topic" noheader="on" nosearch="on" nosummary="on" nototal="on" format=" Tópico: $topic   Versão: $rev"}%

Can we call this a new version of FlexibleSkin? It seems to improve on that.

-- MartinCleaver - 12 Apr 2004

Yes and Not... The author of FlexibleSkin (AntonioTerceiro) is my friend and he likes so the idea of FreeSkin too. Where i know he is using the FreeSkin, but I can't say if he will not upgrade him skin. E aí Terceiro, poderia falar sobre isso?
-- AurelioAHeckert - 25 Apr 2004

I guess we can think of FreeSkin as a improved version of FlexibleSkin. They are based in the same concept, to let users define webs' layout without access to the server, and without the need to create a new skin.

The main difference is that FreeSkin was made with better layout design in mind: while FlexibleSkin uses HTML tables do assemble the layout (what is a horrible practice), FreeSkin "incentivates" people to use CSS, or, at least, don't force them to use tables.

I myself don't use FlexibleSkin anymore. FreeSkin fits all my needs with layout for TWiki webs.

- Hey Aurelio, this looks so good, but am not able to understand how to use it, did you get a chance to write a howto?
thanks
-- HariharanGopalan - 21 Apr 2004 - 20:58

- Yeah! I'm realy need to do that! I'm doing a TWiki tutorial in braziliam portuguise to help people to learn about TWiki and the FreeSkin is in this work. (I gonna use this tutorial on the First Capacitation Week in Free Software of brazilian government.)

Hi Aurelio. How is this different from SeeSkin? Can you please comment on ConsolidateIntoFewerSkins?

-- MartinCleaver - 08 May 2004

Hi Martin. I will write about on ConsolidateIntoFewerSkins... By now, you can see the FreeSkin don't define any thing, like SeeSkin does. I try to say to the persons to do layouts in the TableLess philosophy, but my idea is give a freedom to this person do what he want. And more, by a fill months i only do things on TableLess, but i have so much ways to write the base html to be formated by the css... so, i need the freedom to get the ways ;).

The examples at FreeSkin#Some_References are impressive.

Would it be possible to publish here how they were acheived?

-- AntonAylward - 28 Mar 2005

The raw mode can help you. put ?raw=on on the URS's end of the topics FreeSkinPreTopic and FreeSkinPosTopic on webs using the FreeSkin.

See this "new" examples:

Aurelio, these sites look really good. Hopefully you can tell us how you made these skins...

Note that on IE most of your pages throw an alert saying that there is a script that really slows down the computer and asks whether I want to abort this script.... never seen this before....
