Feedback on GitPlugin

-- ThomasWeigert - 2010-09-12

Thank you Thomas and everybody else who worked on this plugin for sharing this very useful enhancement with the TWiki community! This is very much in line with the TWikiMission. TWiki is frequently used by large organizations that have a presence around the world; this extension makes it easier to share content.

Yes, Peter, this is precisely what I am using this for. I have this installed in 4 locations world-wide, sharing TWiki seamlessly.

-- ThomasWeigert - 2010-09-13

A word of caution: the installation process is rather complex, due to the need to set up the communication infrastructure. But it is well worth it, if you find yourself logging into multiple TWikis, possibly going through firewalls in the process.

We have many people already using TWiki-5.0. When you find time, I recommend that you test for 5.0 compatibility and fix/enhance as needed.

For major TWiki extensions like this, I recommend maintaining it in Subversion, e.g. SVN:GitPlugin.

An update has been uploaded which includes performance enhancements for very large webs (> 1000 topics). Special handling for some plugins is added to synchronize their work areas.

Thank you Thomas for sharing this update!

In lieu of the SSO plugin, I would love to try this out just synchronizing the user (and perhaps TWiki) webs between TWiki installations, as I want, if not single-sign-on, just to synchronize the users (I have the need to break up a site into multiple sites, and I'd hate to have to require people to register multiple times or change passwords in multiple places).

Sound reasonable?

I would add this opportunity to add support for any requests to separate the 'user' web from 'main' web. I know this is not the right place for that smile

Not sure if the GitPlugin works on TWiki-5.x, it is indicated to be tested only on TWiki-4.3. HideyoImazu is working on multi-site feature, which will be available in the next major release of TWiki.

On separating the User and Main webs, you do not get into the issue if you reserve the Main web for users and groups, and create all content in other webs. On a site that has a single purpose, such as a knowledge base, the knowledge base should be in a dedicated web. Navigation can be done so that users end up in the KB web by default.

I'd be happy to chat with anyone interested in adding codeq (Rich Hickey's Datomic- and Git-based documentation framework) to the mix. See WishList: Codeq for Wikis for background information.
