Feedback on OrphansPlugin

-- CrawfordCurrie - 16 Sep 2006

Thanks Crawford for sharing this plugin with the TWiki community, especially useful for WikiChampions and administrators!

Suggestion: The automated installation instructions are kind of long. How about creating a HowToInstallPlugins? document, describe the steps there, and link to it from the plugin topic? That has the advantage that the instructions can be changed/enhanced without the need to update all the plugin topics.

-- PeterThoeny - 19 Sep 2006

Fair point; however, where woukld the topic go? If it is in TWiki web, then it will not be present in older twiki releases, and won;t update if the instructions change and the plugin is re-released. If it goes on twiki.org, there is no guarantee the installer can access it and the same probem exists; which plugin versions do the instructions apply to? I wrestled with this and decided that embedding the instructions was the only option. Fortunately it's easy for a plugin author to do this; they just include %$INSTALL_INSTRUCTIONS% in their topic.

This plugin doesn't seem to work with topic names that contain special characters such as umlauts. In this case, links to such a topic are not found and the topic is marked as an orphan. Is it generally advisable to avoid using umlauts in topic names?

Thanks for updating this plugin! For some reason I'm still having trouble with topic names containing umlauts - they're all listed as being orphans. I'm using TWiki 4.1.2 and OrphansPlugin Rev. 14770.

I have a horrible feeling the problem is in the TWiki core, rather than the plugin. I'm afraid I only did a cursory test on 4.1.2, in an English-only wiki; my client does not require UTF-8, so the motivation to do more is very, very low frown

I do understand that UTF-8 support is not important to you - and I guessed that the problem might be buried somewhere in the core (although I haven't come across many UTF-8 issues in TWiki in general). Thanks for your help anyway!
