Idea for SurveyPlugin

This is a topic to discuss the idea for a Survey Plugin.

Some random thoughts:

  • TWiki already has TWikiForms with QuerySearch features. This lends itself to a survey application.
  • Many times, surveys want to be conducted anonymously, but behind firewall, TWiki typically is configured for a complete audit trail where users need to login. The survey app would need to provide the option to fill out a survey anonymously.
  • A survey could be defined with a TWikiForms form definition. Or, the plugin could define its own syntax where a TWikiForms form definition is generated.
  • Nice survey question rendering in view mode would be preferred over filling out a form in edit mode.
  • The submitted survey data needs to be view access restricted to a group.
  • The plugin could generate FormattedSearch pages to mine the data. Those pages need to be view access restricted to a group.

Example survey, non-functioning visual example:

1. About yourself:
Empty transparent 16x16 spacer Name: (optional)
Empty transparent 16x16 spacer Email: (optional)
Empty transparent 16x16 spacer Continent: (optional)
2. What are your favorite dishes:
Empty transparent 16x16 spacer checked-square.gif Sushi
Empty transparent 16x16 spacer unchecked-square.gif Spaghetti
Empty transparent 16x16 spacer unchecked-square.gif Dim-Sum
Empty transparent 16x16 spacer unchecked-square.gif Hamburger
Empty transparent 16x16 spacer checked-square.gif Fondue
3. Do you cook?
Empty transparent 16x16 spacer unchecked-round.gif no
Empty transparent 16x16 spacer checked-round.gif yes
Empty transparent 16x16 spacer

The Plugin's own syntax w/ parameters and format can borrow many features from TWikiForms and FormattedSearch.

Two ways for Anonymous options:

  1. two submit buttons: one for Submit Survey as Anonymous, one is just Submit Survey, I personally prefer this one
  2. Radio box for the options ... See More

How to mine the generated survey data when users hit the Submit button, put it into database? or sort the results first then format it, and post it on a web page w/ user authentication?

I think the easiest approach is to use existing TWiki functionality such as TWikiForms. That way, survey results can be stored in access controlled TWiki pages, and it is easy to do SQL reports and graphs. An unauthenticated survey script is basically the view script limited so survey submit functionality.

The MicroFormat standard GIFT could be used as syntax for this plugin.
