I tried installing the CFK Vector for Kids distro on a Compaq Deskpro 590. I wasn't entirely successful, mainly because I didn't find the right driver / settings for the video card which is some variety of Matrox (maybe mga ultima, but I found no Vector driver marked like that, and the ones I tried did not work.
Just some tidbits about the Compaq Desktop 590:
- Video card, pci, Compaq assembly 004111-001 Rev. F, but apparently a Matrox (mga ultima??) -- not sure which (Vector) Linux driver to use -- tried the first two listed without success, but maybe I screwed up some other setting.
- Hayes modem, ISA, 1995, no obvious marking for speed, the biggest chip (aside from what appears to be a PROM) is a Rockwell with markings including the following: RC288DPI; Rockwell 95; R6682-26; 9619 B11520-3 (maybe 9600 bps?)
- The machine I worked on included a modem:
- The machine I worked on did not include a CD-ROM.
- The drives are mounted on a nifty little swing up panel, with a plastic retainer on top (easy to spot) and a thin metal catch, on the side, on the same side as the plastic retainer.
