Some recent Linux Distributions are compiled to require a Pentium (586) or better. Some Distributions still are compiled to work on 486s and maybe 386s. Compiled distributions that require a given processor might be recompiled (by you) to work with a lesser processor.

See the entry for "Mandrake 7.2 and below" under the heading "Distributions Compiled for 486s" -- note that the entry is not repeated under "Distributions Compiled for 586s", even though a distribution compiled for a 486 will work on a 586.
