Service is a name for a function performed by your computer on a continuous basis (my words), often via a daemon.
Service (service) is also a command | program | script that exists in at least Mandrake distributions to help control services, like Apache (httpd), ftp,
DNS (??routed), .... (See also
inetd and
xinetd.)
Typical commands include:
- service httpd status
- service routed stop
- service httpd start
- service httpd restart
- service -s (to see the status of all services)
The script is found in /sbin/service and can make worthwhile reading. AFAICT, it relieves you of having to do something like "kill HUP" to stop and restart a service.
