Question

I "believe" that I followed all installations instructions correctly, however when I point my browser to the configure script it only shows the contents of the script and does not run the script itself. It has permissions set to 555.

Double check your web server configuration. You need a section pointing to the bin directory of your installation which allows ExecCGI and sets a handler (probably cgi-script).
