Question
Oh dear. I broke TWiki.
Ever since I upgraded to TWiki 4, I have been unable to us
PatternSkin. Something was just wrng with the CSS.
Today I decided to try to "fix" this. I "fixed" it all right!
I moved my templates/ directory out of the way and replaced it with the templates directory from a TWiki 4 tree that neversaw previous revisions (no Sept 2004 files in this tree; originally installed as TWiki 4)
Then I removed the pub/TWiki/PatternSkin* directories and replaced
them with the ones from the "pristine" TWiki 4 installation.
Everything looked good until I tried to edit a page. All I see is
TopicName (edit)
> Show Formatting help

Answer
You should not have a
pub/PatternSkin
directory at all. After installation, pattern templates are located in the
templates
directory as filenames
templates/*.pattern.tmpl
, and the CSS files are in
pub/TWiki/PatternSkin
.
[_That was a typo. Yes, it's pub/TWiki/PatternSkin* - vlb_ ]
I would normally recommend to simply re-install from
PatternSkin, only that I failed to download a complete archive in several attempts, they all are truncated after some 190kB.

This looks like javascript not working. First try to update
pub/TWiki/TWikiJavascripts/twiki.js
(copy from
here).

Apparently this is related to the TWISTY bug. When I downloaded and installed the latest
PatternSkin archive for Nov 9, the problem was solved and now I see
%TWISTYSHOW{id="edithelp" link="Show help" imgleft="/t ...
I didn't even know I had TWISTY.
Now I get to fix... TWISTY

Well, with the benefits of features comes the price of dependencies...
The
TwistyPlugin installer should download what you need.

Well, that's bad. Now that I've instaled Twisty I'm back to no Edit area

After updating the
JavaScript file, I have neither an editing area nor a "Show Formatting Help" twisty.

Did you use the latest pattern skin
updated updater from 9 Nov? Please see the message
PatternSkin, at the top.

Yes to the latest
PatternSkin (that was anothertypo, or remembero). Apparently I had to re-do that after installing TWISTY.
Now I have a different problem. Onward.
