I recognize two general approaches -- one is using the rewrite engine, one is adjusting the Alias' (Alii??) and
ScriptAlias' in the Apache httpd.conf file. Apparently the rewrite engine adds quite a bit of overhead -- see
Support.SpeedingUpTWiki.
