Bugs I've reported or am interested in for bugzilla

  • 81920: Bugzilla is search-engine unfriendly -- around 20011117 there was some indication this might be fixed (improved?) in version 2.18.

Looks like they intentionally don't plan to fix it (they think most projects wouldn't want their bugzilla indexed (doesn't sound fully "open source" somehow wink )), but there is a note suggesting a workaround:

From Dave Miller on 2001-09-23:

This would be a piece of cake to do with an Apache rewrite rule. Since we can't set up rewrite rules as part of Bugzilla it'd have to be a docs thing.

RewriteRule ^/show_bug/(\d+)\.html$ /show_bug.cgi?id=$1

The intent of that rewrite rule would be to rewrite any "incoming" URL of the form:

To the form:

<now I have a use for the lightbulb icon / thingie>

So, maybe now I see how a rewrite rule works — you can "make up" a "bogus" URL (not sure how much freedom you have — can it be a different domain?) and have "your" webserver serve the page after translating from the bogus URL to a real URL (in your domain, I guess).

And, yes, I think I now see how I can do something similar in TWiki (other people saw it before me, I just didn't get how it worked or how to modify it for my particular circumstances / site).

Except (next question) must I be root (or similar) to create / install a rewrite rule? I suspect there are some restrictions.
