David Warthen and Garrett Gruener, who set out to humanize the Internet by making it easier and more intuitive for you to find the information, created Ask Jeeves in 1996. Ask Jeeves' artist in residence Marcos Sorensen created the early versions of Jeeves, the familiar Internet butler, capturing such characteristics as trustworthy, reliable, friendly and accessible.

The Ask Jeeves home page lets you search by Web Pages, News, and Shopping. This site also allows you to download the Ask Jeeves Toolbar to your browser for free. You can also click on the following links on the Ask Jeeves home page:

  • What are People Asking - takes you to a web page showing the Ask Jeeves top searches.

  • Breaking News - takes you to a web page showing the top news headlines.

  • Browse by Subject - takes you to a web page with a listing of general subjects.

  • AJKids - takes you to a web page designed specifically for kids to ask questions.

I could not find how many web pages were indexed, only that Ask Jeeves does link with third party search engines such as Overture which has created a database of 7.4 million customized search listings, under the section that says "you may find these sponsored links helpful". Also you do have to pay an annual fee to Ask Jeeves to get your website indexed on their search engine.

According to New York-based Internet research firm Jupiter Media Metrix, Ask Jeeves was the fifteenth most popular Web media property in April.
