Metacrawler was originally developed in 1994 at the University of Washington by then graduate student Erik Selberg and Associate Professor Oren Etzioni. The site joined the InfoSpace Network in 2000 and is owned and operated by InfoSpace, Inc.

Metacrawler is a meta-search engine that searches the Internet's top search engines such as AltaVista, Direct Hit, Looksmart and About. When you use Metacrawler , you are actually searching many search engines simultaneously

Metacrawler also offers a free e-mail account. There is a drop down box next to the place you would enter your topic to search. You can then choose to search the web, images, shopping, audio/mp3, directory, multimedia and message boards. On Metacrawler's home page, you will also find sections as follows:

  • Browse the web's best directory

  • Popular Searches

  • Resources

  • Shopping Tools

Near the bottom of the page, Metacrawler gives you a spot to search for businesses. Metacrawler has a link for MetaSpy, a function that shows you what others on the Internet searching at that very moment, and refreshes every 15 seconds. There is also a feature called minicrawler. MiniCrawler is a little search box launched on your desktop similar to a search toolbar.

According to New York-based Internet research firm Jupiter Media Metrix, Infospace of which Metacrawler is part of, was the tenth most popular Web media property in April. It did not list how many pages were indexed.
