I still use Adaptec Easy CD Creator on Windows to burn CDs. This page is to record some reminders.

Aside: I recently upgraded to version 4 something (from 3.1b (or c?) -- has some neat sounding stuff for video (create a video CD), but if you do the custom install you can avoid all that other garbage and then the install is about 13 MB.

Aside: Take Two was included and was billed (IIRC) as something to recover from CD problems, but it looks like its just a hard drive imaging tool that makes use of CDDirect -- I may look a little closer before I delete it.

  • Dos or Windows bootable CD: use ISO9660, choose bootable, and insert a bootable disk when asked. Bootcat.bin and bootcat.sys then appear on your CD "image" list. If you copy those two files to c:\windows\temp, version 4 will find them and offer to use them next time (I think -- discovered this by accident and haven't yet copied the files there -- I guess worse case I can burn a cd then copy those two files off the burned CD and put them there).

  • Linux bootable disk: there may be other options, but if you download an iso and it is a bootable iso, all you have to do is "create CD from CD image" and then, when allowed to browse for the image, change the extension to ".iso" in order to be able to find it.

  • Knoppix (distribution) bootable disk: I've noticed that bootcat.bin and bootcat.sys are in the Knoppix directory rather than the "root". I wonder if:
    • I can use the Joliet file system (without installing an additional copy of bootcat.*)
    • I can use the ISO9660 file system (without installing an additional copy of bootcat.*)

  • Always use Disk at Once on audio CDs (avoids the 2 second gap / click / hiss between tracks).
