Several tools exist to configure various aspects of Linux, some command line, some GUI, some via a web browser. This is the beginning of a list along with some simple information (like the web address if web based, and maybe the home page of each on the web). If appropriate, separate WikiLearn pages can be created for each of them.

We need to decide whether it would be better to organize by subject, like X-Window, rather than type (command line, GUI, or web based). It might be nice to include notes about which tools are available on which distros(??) (Or alternatively, for now, just a note that I use Mandrake 7.2 and 8.1 (and have used some others, briefly) and these are tools I am aware of.)

See AboutThesePages.

Web Based Tools

  • Webmin -- https://localhost:10000 (note the s in https)
  • Swat (Samba Web Administration Tool??) -- http://localhost:901 (IIRC) -- works (page comes up) for me and looks like it should be useful (except my current interest is setting up an email server)
  • Linuxconf -- http://localhost:98 -- not just a web based tool, but seems to be available in command line / semi-GUI (ASCII GUI??), GUI, and web-based variations. On one of my Mandrake 7.2 installations (church100), it is command line and available via the web, on a different 7.2 installation (system8) and on 8.1 (system5) it is GUI and available via the web. It looks like it is configurable to configure many things, including postfix (at least the main configuration file). Notes:
    • on the one 7.2 box (system8), I could not get Linuxconf via the web at all, on the other (church100), I got it once, but could not get it subsequently
    • IIRC, both 7.2 boxes are the LinuxFreq 20010316 version.

GUI Tools

  • drakconf
  • userconf
  • userdrake
  • harddrake
  • timeconfig
  • drakfloppy
  • sndconfig

CLI (Command Line) Tools

  • mouseconfig
  • xf86config

X Window

  • xf86config -- command line configuration tool
  • XF86Setup
  • XFdrake -- Mandrake only
  • Xconfigurator -- I thought this had worked for me previously, but lately I cannot get it to start -- basically "command not found" -- I'm not trying very hard at this point.
  • an article -- Intro to X, Basic Tweaks for XFree86 Version 1.0
