Notes and resources on setting the hostname in Linux, and to some extent, its use in Postfix. See also some of the pages on Postfix -- somewhere I learned (and recorded, IIRC) that a host name for postfix could be arbitrary, but needed to be fully qualified, meaning it consisted of at least three dotted parts. Also, I believe that the domain name does not have to be registered, even with one of those "temporary" registries for dynamic ips, but I'm not clear on exactly what you must do in postfix to allow that.

  • (rhk) Re: Hostname and postfix; daRcmaTTeR; 06/19/2002 -- a rather long thread that I should reread and summarize. It tells you the canonical location of the host name for a Linux computer "The hostname is set in /etc/sysconfig/network. /etc/hosts relates hostnames to IP addresses but doesn't really set anything." and digresses usefully into how this occurs during the boot process.
  • (rhk) Specifying a hostname; Aaron Winters; 03/29/2002 -- another thread that looks worthwhile -- much shorter -- this quote might be a reasonable summary of the thread: "from the replies I got it does not seem to matter though it seems to be a good idea to not use top level domain extensions like .com .net. I named mine eol.lcl and it seems to be fine with it."
