System8 is one of my computers, named based on its IP address which is

The following was the configuration of System8 as of 20010706 but much of this was in place considerably before that date. The last upgrade was increasing the memory from 64 to 128 MB, which probably occurred within the last two months:

  • Mandrake 7.2 with MandrakeFreq of 20010315

  • Processor: 200 Mhz. WinChip IDT
  • Memory: 124 MB - 4 MB for onboard video -- 2 64MB PC-100 DIMMs
  • Motherboard: TX-Pro II, on board sound and video (sound might be enabled, but I don't use it (no speakers attached))
  • Serial:
  • Bios:
  • Video: Onboard SiS 5597/5598 (?) using 4 MB of main memory
  • Sound: Onboard SiS
  • NIC: AON-201 NIC, 10base2, (uses Realtek 8029 driver on this machine, uses NE-2000 on some other machines -- NE-2000 driver would not work on this machine (with Mandrake 7.2) -- don't think I tried this under Windows 95, used a different card that did work with NE-2000)
  • Host.Domain: System8.Home
  • Harddrive: 8.4 GB Western Digital
  • CD-Rom: Acer 36X with anti-vibration feature
  • Other:
  • Printer: None -- trying to share printers on MyOffice6A and MyDiningRoomA using samba/cups -- no success so far

System8 has probably had Linux installed since September, 2000 (in varying incarnations). It is set up to dual boot with Windows 95, but has not booted into Windows since then except for brief periods of testing.

Linux Installation: Mandrake 7.2 with MandrakeFreq of 20010315 Almost all software is the version that came with the Mandrake packages mentioned.

Other software installed (i.e., not from the listed distributions):

  • Netscape 3.0x
  • StarOffice 5.2 (installed as a test before LVCG meeting -- not bad -- will probably leave installed until I need the space)

Main Function (ca. June, 2001):

  • Currently runs a TWiki "server" (20010315 beta) on Apache
  • Plan to run a mail server (fetchmail, postfix, procmail, pop server) for my home LAN
  • My Linux workstation, probably used 25 to 40% of the time -- MyOffice6A, my main Windows workstation is probably used most of the remainder. MySystem11A is my CD-Rom burner.

(Prior to that, from ~19991100 to 20000430 it was my desktop unit at work, running Windows 95, Office 97, Attachmate, Visio, VB5, VB6, and VC++, etc., with a lot less memory (16 MB??) and with satisfactory response. It replaced the 486 that I had used previously for the same functions, with satisfactory response, but did provide a noticeable improvement in performance.)

  • ~25 Nov. 2003: Apparent hard disk crash (on the WD8.4) — some partitions (the dos / Windows) still accessible. Trying various means to recover the data without success so far. I believe I will be able to retrieve a lot of it, but with a lot of manual effort. The reason I hadn't created backups is that I hadn't yet managed to use Samba or NFS "fluently" so as to copy data to my backup machine (with CD burner). Now installing removable hard drive racks on main machines so I can back up to hard disk and then move to another machine, although using NFS seems to be "just around the corner". I will save the WD 8.4 disk and some partition information and similar so I can make more efforts at recovery in the future. For now I'm installing a different hard drive (2.5 GB) and will aim to get the email server working again. Suspected reason for failure: Too much vibration from heavy feet on the steps.
