Just starting this page by quoting from an email I sent: Darn, I can see that I messed up some of the text -- I should not send email with a headache (and without my glasses -- I'll fix some of it here.

Different point:

A (related?) pet peeve of mine is web pages that don't wrap to the width of my window / screen. There are ways to make pages do that, even if it includes long verbatim lines that should not be word wrapped -- if you write the page properly those lines will not be wrapped but all other lines will be.

There are (at least) two disadvantages to those long lines:

  • People like me (with 800x600 or smaller screen resolution (and screen size to match -- 15 to 17")) have to horizontally scroll to read each line (or set the type size too small to read).
  • People who have larger screens and don't have to wrap have to (IMHO) move their eyes excessively to take in an entire line, leading to slower reading and quicker fatigue.

Since you have a "bully pulpit", I'd sure like to enlist your aid in spreading the message. (I will start a WikiLearn page on the subject, probably http://twiki.org/cgi-bin/view/Wikilearn/WebPagesShouldWrapToWindow (until I think of a better name), and start by copying this on that page.
