Welcome to TWiki! This is a
TWikiSite (pronounced
twee-kee site), a meeting place to work on common interests. Anyone can contribute using any web browser. TWiki looks like a normal web site... except that it encourages contribution and
editing of pages, questions, answers, comments, updates, etc.
"Wiki" systems are fundamentally editable web pages. It's a fun and useful way of communicating asynchronously over the web for many existing intranet and public Internet sites. TWiki is simple to learn and use. It aims to provide a transparent way for you to publish and exchange your ideas with others over the web.
What's in a TWiki?
- Webs: A TWikiSite is divided into webs, each one represents a workspace for collaboration. This site has the following webs: Blog, Codev, Main, Plugins, Sandbox, Support, TWiki, TWiki01, TWiki02, TWiki03, TWiki04, TWiki04x01, TWiki04x02, TWiki04x03, TWiki05x00, TWiki05x01, TWiki06x00, TWiki06x01, WikiWed.
- Topics: Each web is made up of hyperlinked topics (wiki pages) that appear in your browser.
Some things to do
- Browse. This is a site like other sites. Read and follow interesting links.
- Write. Speak your mind! From your browser you can change or add to anything you see in a TWiki topic. Modify content with an easy to use WYSIWYG editor.
- Experiment. Visit the Sandbox web and create as many topics as you like.
- Organize. You can learn to use TWikiForms and formatted searches with SQL-like queries to include topic information - for example, classify pages by subject, status, or date.
- Learn more. Some good places to start:
- TWikiTutorial is a 20-minute tour of TWiki essentials.
- ATasteOfTWiki is a short introduction training course for beginners.
- WikiReferences links to selected articles and books about wiki technology and online collaboration.
- WikiSyntax - simple wiki syntax for those using raw edit instead of WYSIWYG editor
- GoodStyle - recommendations for edits

Comments & Questions about this Distribution Document Topic
This looks like an excellent way to allow a community of practice to share ideas, grow together, and develop a collabrative knowledge base, capturing and publishing knowledge as it is created. Thank you for sharing your efforts with this community.

so, I'm guessing you just copy a pre-existing chunk and then edit it to your preferences? Ok, I haven't read the directions / tutorial yet, but I do have one comment... >
I'd like it listed on every main page, including this one, whether or not, and how one can CREATE A NEW PAGE on this thing. I mean, I'm sure it's in the documentation somewhere, that you can or can't, maybe you have to pay to do that, and if so, how to do it, but I think that's the kind of thing people will want to know. Search features are useful every once in awhile. Let me see what happens when I type "create a page"
--
AbMendez - 15 Sep 2004
You can create new pages easily. You don't have to pay anything.
One way is to just type the name of the new page in the "Jump" box at the top of this page. That will create an unlinked page though. The other is to type the name of the new page in a relevant place, like this:
AnExampleNewPage. Then (when you save your edit) you can click on that link and edit your new page....

(Since people seem inclined to add comments to this page, I added the "Add Comment" dialog, to keep things tidy).

As I mentioned in
QuickStartTutorial, I would like to see
WelcomeGuest reworked so as not to throw quite so much as our poor guests all at once. Here's some initial thoughts about how I would do this:
- Rewrite the initial welcome to be very, very brief and suscinct. Few people read these initial blurbs anyway.
- Offer options for guests to choose where to go next. In general, I see these falling under two user styles:
- Get rid of "How TWiki Works" because it tries to address both of the above tracks without achieving either very well (IMHO).
- Relocate everything else on this page into one of the topics listed above.

I completely agree...
GO FOR IT!
--
MartinGregory - 09 Oct 2004
WelcomeGuest is too wordy & dense.
It needs to make you feel relaxed and excited, not like you are reading 'man (8) twiki'
I can't actually put my finger on why this is so, because Grant Bow has clearly thought about the basic things people need to know, and they are all there in a logical way, but it's just not friendly somehow... one thing is that Grant was explicitly careful not to change "what is there". While a great improvement, maybe this constraint needs to be removed to get the effect we really need.

How does Twiki stackup to other wikis? I think this is the best wiki I have seen.
--
RamaraoKanneganti - 13 Oct 2004
Obviously, it's the best!

the documentation in this section is def'ly concise & makes the NewUser feel more
at-ease w/ 'tweeeking'. i'd come across some documentation (w/ the current version) that described the previous version, but can't quite put my finger on it - if i find it, shall either post an update here or ping Peter.

Can anyone explain the difference between "Quiet Save" and "Save" when creating a topic? I can't find a reference to this option anywhere. Best wishes, Liz
--
LizPanton - 02 May 2005
"Quiet Save" does not alert users on the
WebNotify list (this is per web)

PeterThoeny - 04 May 2005
Well i read the configuration tutorial and found that some knowledge of perl is required to install twiki. Is there any pointers how this can be done easily???
--
NikeshPatel - 07 Jun 2005
Great -- but is it possible to make the editor WYSIWYG?
--
IzakJenie - 04 Nov 2005
Please check out the
WysiwygPlugin.
--
PeterThoeny - 04 Nov 2005
It is possible I can delete information and delete all the content in this page, or change the order, etc,... Definetively, cause damage in an interest content as this one can be?? This is quite dangerous, isn't it?
--
InigoRobredo - 29 Nov 2005
Not really, your edit didn't stay at the top of the topic vey long. Enough people monitor recent changes that damage doesn't last long. And even if content was deleted it's easy enough to restore it from the revision history.
--
SamHasler - 29 Nov 2005
which is the percentage of that peoplw that monitor changes in order to the people that is generating or editing topics? I mean, the most topics you have, the most people you need to monitorize and avoid bad changes last a long time. I'm thinking about installing a twiki, but i'd like to know the efforts necesaries to mantain the site. Thank you for your information.
--
InigoRobredo - 29 Nov 2005
You don't have to monitor every topic. Just the ones that are changing. You can do that from topics such as
WebChanges or
WebChangesForAllWebs. Casual damage by inexperienced users, people testing the site and the anti-social doesn't take much effort to clean up, what can be more time consuming is
WikiSpam. You could read the
WikiSpam and associated topics for some idea of the damage that can be done by spammers, but don't be too put off, with
BlackListPlugin installed you should be pretty well protected.

how different is TWIKI, when compared to other enterprise wiki
--
PrasadHari - 02 Mar 2007
Prasad: Other enterprise wikis are what I call "plain wikis", they have a fixed functionality (wiki, blogs, spreadsheet, etc). TWiki is the only enterprise wiki that is a
StructuredWiki where users can create new wiki based applications, often called
situational applications. Also, compared to other wikis, TWiki has by far the largest number of extensions (plugins, add-ons, skins.)

Hi, i will need your help regarding setting up TWIKI User Authentication. I actually want to do login using intranet. So that once somebody enter there own intranet user and password, it directly let the user enter the site. I have set up twiki on Windows XP using Cygwin. So which kind of authentication i should use to link my intranet ids with twiki. I checked the site but there is no clear explaination about this. It only tells that REMOTE_USER variable will do that but i dont know the internal mappings. Please help me with it.

Just eliminated the
[Preview]
item in the
[Edit]
section because when trying TWiki for the first time, normally the WYSIWYG editor is used and therefore no preview available.

This looks quite useful. I'm curious why the last person to comment before me, seems to have done so over 6 years ago. Is this page no longer in use?

TWiki is in use by thousands of companies internally. This welcome page has not been updated in a long time.
