Wikidot

Wikidot is another example of a wiki hosting service that recently (ultimo jan 2008) released its platform as open source (GNU Affero General Public License version 3 in this case).

Pretty basic wiki functionality (no WikiWord linking though), but some interesting corners like for instance

  • authentication by OpenID (https://www.myopenid.com/)
  • the concept of a "SiteManager" having all admin-related functions accessible in an AJAX environment
  • some monetizing focus (i.e. easy integration with AdSense / Analytics)
  • a backup option ("Take a snapshot of this site!")
  • "View diff" as preview option
  • a simple one-level customizable drop down menu bar, customized through a wikipage (http://hotspot.wikidot.com/nav:top)
  • easy social bookmarking (using [[social blinkbits,blinklist,blogmarks,co.mments,connotea,del.icio.us,de.lirio.us,digg,fark,feedmelinks,furl,linkagogo,ma.gnolia,newsvine,netvouz,rawsugar,reddit,scuttle,shadows,simpy,smarking,spurl,tailrank,wists,yahoomyweb,facebook]] style markup - not sure TWiki even has a social bookmarking plugin yet, actually .. somebody please do something about that :-))
  • it does have transclusion of topics and a concept of variables in pages - features that are rare out there still. In this case actually using a syntax not very far from that of TWiki
  • some wikis are starting to do "dialogue" and "wiki" close, but separated - this one also. There is a "forum" possibility where threads have no "edit" button, but only "reply"/"fold"/"unfold"/etc (example). Apparently this trend is from the thought that there is less "blank paper"-stopper associated with a forum / a blog / etc - but in my view it is a sad trend, starting to have "private untouchable areas" in the wiki.

I have made an instance at http://hotspot.wikidot.com/ and have tried to open it up as much as possible.

No real I18N support, btw (for instance the file "BlåBærGrød.txt" at my first page test can not be dl'ed with ie ..) .. a "feature" that is typical for hosted services.
