Brainstorming: Confusing per-web WIKILOGO Settings

Provide a consistent browsing experience according to web standards.

DakarRelease offers three logo settings that can be set per web:

  • WIKILOGOIMG: Image of TWiki logo
  • WIKILOGOURL: Link of logo
  • WIKILOGOALT: Alternate tooltip text of logo

It sounds like a good idea to use a different logo for each web. However, according to web usability guru Jakob Nielsen this is one of the top ten mistakes, the upper left hand logo should always point to the site's home page. I agree.

On the other side, a per-web logo is useful for navigation, especially if the logo is used as an icon.

I am not sure how these two cases can be combined into something intuitive and useful. One option is to use the upper left hand logo just for the site logo, and to use a small web specific icon in the breadcrumb and as favicon. Arthur already uses a small web icon in the breadcrumb that has the web background color. Curious if there is another way to represent the web logos intuitively.

It depends how the twiki is used. The logo per web setting is to allow for flexibility.

Some installations will have segregated webs, perhaps even with different rights settings. Then the web logo is a good idea. Recognizability can be increased by combining the web color with the web logo.

On TWiki.org it makes more sense to have one logo that points to the (one) homepage.

Steps are described in the Dakar documentation, see: http://develop.twiki.org/~develop/cgi-bin/view/TWiki/PatternSkinCustomization.

I'm a bit distressed that that there is no TWIKILOGOIMAGE setting - as I change the other 3 when I customize a site...
