Is there anyway to delete information on Wiki? I'm trying to clean ours up...

-- BeckyRuden - 08 Dec 2000

One of the tenets of TWiki seems to be "TWiki never forgets" - however, I think there are suitable solutions to the major issues:

  • Inappropriate topic names - visitors may create imprecise or rude topic names
  • Very large attachments - visitors may abuse TWiki as an online storage facility

To solve the first problem, I propose RenameTopic. For the second problem, I haven't tried this, but it may be possible to upload a small attachment with the same name as the large one, replacing it and freeing the majority of the space.

See the rename feature in the Sep 2001 TWiki release, which lets you rename to a Trash web. A suitable cron job could clear out older files in this web periodically.

Regarding very large attachments, your suggestion doesn't work. Attachments are version controlled via rcs, which is rather simplistic when it comes to binaries. Your suggestion would just grow the original attachment. Rcs, attachments, etc., are discussed elsewhere (do a search).

Any very large attachments can easily be spotted and simply deleted by the admin of the box that TWiki is running on. Unless TWiki is running on a machine with only a few hundred megabits free, this isn't likely to be a problem.

There is move function for attachments, so they can be moved to a topic in the Trash Web, which can be periodically wiped clean. This includes the RCS history. It's also worth noting that some RCSs (I think it depends on the diff in use, do delta for binaries and others don't). There is no facility for deleting a specific revision.

Note that it large attachments are just deleted it will leave a topic pointing to an attachment that doesn't exist. If you want to avoid attachments above a certain size it would be better to block that during upload. It has been suggested that this could be TWiki.cfg parameter.
