Installing Twiki, Dakar version on Windows 2003

First, I want to be clear : this is not the ideal cookbook for installing twiki on Windows 2003 because I still have some problems with my own setup. The goal of this document is to describe my step-by-step process, following the WindowsInstallCookbook, and give as much informations as I can.

Also, forgive me for my poor english ... I am french.

If have a created those topics at the wrong place, forgive me also ... I am a very beginner with twiki smile

I write this because it seems that several people around have successfully installed twiki on windows but I can't find the ideal documentation. Only some partial docs and howto are available.

I laready tried to open some bugs cases or ask a question in the SupportWebHome but with only very few success.

At the end, I hope that this how-to can help other users and also make the installation of Dakar more easy for everybody. Its my personnal contribution to the twiki community and the Dakar documentation.

Who am I ?

I am the network administrator of my company. I am mostly a Windows administrator rather than a linux expert. I also do the technical support for everybody in my company.

Why I am want twiki ?

In fact my company face several communications problems. On of those is the tracking and the availability of bugs reports, documentations and how-tos. Also, I wanted a program that can help me create a community in my own company so other people can contribute for the writing of technical documentation. I also want to add more visibility to the IT projects that I have. By this way, I can create online some good project plans, documentation and how-tos, and, also, to be honest, make my boss more aware of what I am doing during the year :-).

For the bugs traking part, I have installed bugzilla with is a very dawn cool product. And for the several how-tos and documentation I had the idea to using a twiki-like program. After looking around the web, I found twiki.org and thought that it is exactly what I needed. I have started with the help of another user to start the installation with the Cairo release.

Few times after, Dakar was released I have decided to use it and try to install it.

Setup infrastructure

The server which is going to host twiki is the same that I use for bugzilla :

  • Windows 2003
  • IIS6 as web server
  • ActivePerl 5.6.8.xxx

This server is also responsible in my company for other 'central' management software, like SMS 2003, an old intranet, MCAfee EPO orchestrator, etc. This server is responsible to manage several software available for the users like the intranet and bugzilla.

This is the production server.

For the test server, I use :

  • Virtual PC
  • Windows 2003 Web Edition
  • IIS6 as web server
  • ActivePerl

And (for Linux testing)

  • A laptop with Suse Linux 10

NOTE : The test server is also setup with Apache 2, because I wanted to see if the setup of twiki could be easier with Apache 2 instead of IIS6.

NOTE : I don't have a free server to use linux, so I don't plan to have one : if twiki is supposed to work on Windows, I want to use the same server as bugzilla.

NOTE : the option to use a virtual debian installation to use twiki is absolutly not an option. For me, if a user have to do that to have a twiki tunning, it means that twiki maybe fail to be a program that can be installed on almost any OS.

That's the background.

Now, I will detail 2 other topics : one is DakarOnWindows2003AndIIS6 and the other one is DakarOnWindows2003AndApache2 because I have not choose yet with configuration is the more easy to setup.

Remember that right now, twiki is not working for me. In the two topics above, I will describe all the steps and comments where I have some problems.

Those topics will be updated as soon as I have more to say and maybe, a success story with Dakar.

As much users can help, as definitive this HOW-TO could be.

Here are the 2 topics that I am working on :

UPDATE : I have renamed DakarOnWindows2003AndApache2 with DakarOnWindows2003AndApache because I first want to comply with the Twiki recommandations in terms of web server, and as far as I know, Apache 1.3.34 is the one supported for the moment.

I look forward to seeing these topics fleshed out. We also attempted to run TWiki (though it was the Cairo edition) on a Win2003 box with IIS and we didn't succeed.
