Bug: (Cancelling A New Page)

When you cancel a new page, you get a "This Topic Doesn't exist" page. This seems like a bug to me - I should go back to where I was, not to a page that offers to let me create a topic for a page that I just cancelled out of creating. Maybe this is due to general lack of session info?

  • Cancelling out of create new page goes to error, not original page
    • When you click the ? after a WikiWord for a topic that doesn't yet exist, in order to create the new topic, but then click [Cancel] to go back, you DON'T go back to the page you came from, instead, you reach the "page doesn't exist" screen. Getting back to the original requires backing up with the browser Back button. This is confusing, particularly since a number of the not yet created topics are NewUserExamples.

  • This is a good point. You would think the oops page could make sure of the parent information which IS passed to the editor (topicparent or something like that) to redirect back to the original page on a cancel. There are a number of small issues here though that get in the way.
    • On the edit template, there's no easy way to distinguish between edit and create. That is, a "cancel" for an edit means you need to unlock the page so that others can edit it. For create, you don't want to unlock it. That implies that perhaps view, when asked to unlock a page that doesn't exist, should be the one that refreshes back to the parent page (which means parent information needs to be passed farther on).
    • If a user doesn't understand the ? next to the name, (s)he might click on it trying to access that page. They might then realize that (s)he doesn't want to edit it but search for a similar page with similar information. Maybe the thing that brought him/her to that original parent page was the search for particular information. Thus, (s)he is given a page that does ask them to search. So some people might actually find it useful that it goes to the oops page.
  • Either way, I do think things could be done better. I know I personally find myself getting into the habit of back-clicking two times. It's not really the most user friendly option.

Test case

Start entering a bug, then cancel out of it (for example - this happens in many page creation places).

Fix record

Commenting on When you click the ? after a WikiWord for a topic that doesn't yet exist:

One way to solve this is to lead the user to the "Create new page" template (TWiki.WebNewTopicViewTemplate) instead of to the Edit page directly (see NewTopicTemplate for an example screenshot). The field and parent dropdown should be prefilled, so the user can just click "Create" or still change the topic's parent or template. (Of course the captions with the form fields should be adjusted.) This all would make clear what the ? link does without throwing the user into editing.

And if the user is not allowed to edit pages, this would make the transition cleaner (he would not see an error page directly). Optionally there should be a warning that the user cannot create a page.

  • This implies that this page is a template, not a topic (because the link is hardwired in TWiki.pm). I have implemented this template in my own TWiki.

Correction: lead the user back to the TWiki.WebNewTopicViewTemplate he just started from. He can choose another template here for instance. So topic creation is a 2-step process, and cancelling when editing too.

This should be fixed.

Is anything going to happen with this (sorry Arthur, I'm asking you because you know about this sort of thing) If not, please unassign it from DakarRelease.

-- CrawfordCurrie - 14 Apr 2005

implemented for DakarRelease in CreateCancelFail
