I would like to be able to integrate TWiki with real-time communications such as IRC.
This is like a poor-man's version of SameTime? .
This can be achieved reasonably-easily with the mIRC client since it supports URLs in the irc://irc.organisation.org/channel format:
http://www.mirc.co.uk/mirclink.html

However, currently TWiki doesn't automatically turn this into a HyperLink?

You should be able to configure this by editing TWiki.cfg as defined in TelnetURLSupport - just add 'irc' as a protocol for use in URLs. You will need the TWikiBetaRelease.

InternetExplorer 5.5 supports irc://foo/bar URLs, as does MozillaBrowser 1.0 (via its ChatZilla IRC client) - not sure about other browsers. See also InstantNotification for some ideas on how to get instant notification of topic changes.
