The main thing is to get the necessary patches into the
"core" wiki so these plugins can be done as simple plugins.
Right now both of them need changes to internalLink and other
core functions.

StanleyKnutson - 26 Feb 2001
Probably 20010501 is better ... do we want an "April fool TWiki version"?
--
AndreaSterbini - 26 Feb 2001
What's the process for documentation? Do changes happen to the TWiki topic on TWiki.org before the capability is there or?
--
JohnTalintyre - 27 Feb 2001
Process for documentation: We usually refine the spec in a topic of the Codev web; implement it; take it into Alpha; and finally document it in the TWiki web.
--
PeterThoeny - 04 Mar 2001
I think the important thing now its to go into feature freeze by next week. ie. Have an empty "Nice to Have" list.
We've added quite a bit to this version of TWiki, so bug fixing and documentation will take a while.

NicholasLee - 06 Mar 2001
ergle. I've been busy getting into my new job, so i haven't done anything for the wiki..
--
SvenDowideit - 12 Apr 2001
Does a 1st May release look feasible given that it is two weeks away?
--
MartinCleaver - 17 Apr 2001
Lets postpone the targeted release date to 01 Jun 2001 with a code freeze in mid May. This should give us enough time to finish all pending features and to bring the quality back to the normal TWiki standard.
--
PeterThoeny - 26 Apr 2001
Hey, I hate to be seen to be fussing, but 1st June is whizzing ever closer. Can we review to look for features that are nowhere near done (esp.
ConvertToXHTML10) and see whether to postpone them to the next version? Also, it would be useful to know what would be lost with those modules that are 90% done.
--
MartinCleaver - 23 May 2001
Martin, have you tried the
TWikiAlphaRelease? Do you have any concerns with it? We need to make sure the quality of the current release is not lost.
--
JohnTalintyre - 23 May 2001
No, I admit that I have not seen it. I no longer have scheduled time to work on our TWiki.
Re:
TWikiAlphaRelease - is is installed on SF on both Unix and NT?
Also, do you know whether it will co-exist with the dec 2000 version? I couldn't install it on our existing box without being sure that (e.g.) it wouldn't prevent the production version working.
--
MartinCleaver - 24 May 2001
I don't know about the
SourceForge installation. It can't co-exist with a production version, at least data/pub files can't be shared as file format is different. Format change caused by
GenericMetaDataStoreForTopics. Also
RCS changes for attachments breaks compatibility.
So you can move up to new version from old with no special effort, but you can't go back.
--
JohnTalintyre - 24 May 2001
On investigation I find that
SourceForge has a server farm with all sorts of UNIX machines in it. It appears to not have any NT machines. (
http://sourceforge.net/docman/display_doc.php?docid=762&group_id=1 ). Shame!

I am happy to discover I'm the first writer after the 25th of may SF disaster

Are we in a position to create the next beta now? I ask because I had told people at work about the "Spring" release and I'd like to have something to show!
--
MartinCleaver - 08 Jun 2001
I think its time to code/feature freeze.
We've even missed calling it
NorthernLongestDay2001Release, so I guess we might have to settle at this rate for
NorthernMidSummer2001Release
--
NicholasLee - 15 Jun 2001
I agree about the freeze - I'd really like to deploy some of the new features, particularly
RenameTopic. Seems like the March beta has turned into an unofficially deployable release, but it would be good to have a real production release out there, even if some features have to be left for a follow-on release.
--
RichardDonkin - 16 Jun 2001
I'd like to freeze also as soon as possible. One details needs to go in in order to avoid file format problems: Category handling of new
GenericMetaDataStoreForTopics format. John and I exchanged some e-mail. Will follow up in Codev.
Core team: We should focus now on fixing pending bugs and documentation.
For upcoming releases we will use code names, thus avoiding confusion in northern & southern hemnisphere differences and delays in release.
For now, lets stick with the name, so lets gather
TWikiReleaseSpring2001UpgradeNotes.

Most of
FormTemplateSystem now in CVS. Still a few things for me, see
JohnTalintyre, all fairly minor (I hope).

Is it soup yet?

DavidWeller - 29 Jun 2001
A new 01 Jul 2001
TWikiBetaRelease is available for developers at the usual download location. This release is a "quick release" that has not been tested as usual. Please note that this release is not suitable for production use because the spec might change a little (especially the file format). We would appreciate feedback on this Beta. New Betas will come up more frequently in the next two weeks.

PeterThoeny - 01 Jul 2001
What is best way to report "bugs" for this release? I'm confused why I keep seeing "Parent:" at the top of my TWiki pages, but nothing is displayed after it (and shouldn't it say something like "Last Topic Visited"?)
Also, has anybody created a skin that conforms to the new skin plugin rules so that people can start to tinker? Seems like it would be a Way-Cool-Thing if there was some kind of example "Skin template". I know this is NOT something one of the four key developers should do, but I'm wondering if anybody is already slaving away at getting something like this done (I've been trying to get the DRKW skin to conform, but I'm just too much of a TWiki-dev newbie to get things to work right).

DavidWeller - 01 Jul 2001
The parent line is very new and has the major problem that we don't have this information at present. However, for newly created pages it will be filled in. Also you can add a parent to an existing page. The method is fairly obscure (really a side effect), use edit script with parent=web.topic as a URI parameter.

JohnTalintyre - 12 Jul 2001
We found more bugs in the recent Beta releases then we used to have with previous releases (thanks everybody who helps with bug reports and fixes!). The bugs will offset our revised schedule by yet another two weeks. I hope you agree that a stable production release can justify this delay. See the top for the new target dates.

PeterThoeny - 01 Aug 2001
How far aways are we from having a new
TWikiReleaseCandidate?
--
MartinCleaver - 29 Aug 2001
Final Beta on or before 02 Sep 2001.
--
PeterThoeny - 31 Aug 2001
hmm... don't see a release yet on the beta download site. I'm willing to wait a little longer (hey, it's free software, I'm not going to complain when good people are volunteering their mental sweat equity to write something as cool as Twiki!). My big questions is, how "safe" is it to start using the latest beta for production use? What I mean is, can we expect that the saved topics aren't going to get "broken" as the remaining pieces get fixed? I'd like to start using something within my company now ASAP, but won't if you guys think you might break a thing or two...
--
DavidWeller - 04 Sep 2001
No major changes will be done and the file format will not change. We are now very closed to production with 28 Aug 2001 Beta. If you can live with the known bugs and docs in flux you can use it for production.
